German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he does not expect German troops to be deployed to Ukraine, ntv reports.
“This is not even on the agenda at the moment,” Merz stated during an interview with Welt TV.
“We are far from a ceasefire and even further from a peace agreement,” he added.
According to Merz, the three-day ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict declared by Russian leader Vladimir Putin to mark the end of World War II could potentially be “extended.”
“But that entirely depends on the Russian government,” Merz noted.
The German chancellor also confirmed plans to visit Ukraine in the near future.
Meanwhile, Germany’s new Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, during his first visit to Poland, reaffirmed Germany and Europe’s support for Ukraine.
