U.S. President Donald Trump expressed hope that Russia and Ukraine will “make a deal” for peace this week.
He wrote this on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Sunday.
After a “peace” agreement is reached, Trump believes Russia and Ukraine will start doing business with the United States and “make fortunes.”
“Hopefully Russia and Ukraine make a deal this week. Both countries will start doing big business with the United States of America, which is thriving, and they will make fortunes,” the American president stated.
Earlier, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. is ready to abandon its efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine if there is no progress “in the coming days.”
Subsequently, Trump also confirmed that he may drop attempts to broker a “peace deal” between Ukraine and Russia if there is no progress, though he did not specify the conditions under which that would happen.
Previously, Bloomberg reported that American proposals for a “peace agreement” between Russia and Ukraine include easing sanctions on Russia in exchange for a long-term ceasefire and dropping discussions of Ukraine’s NATO aspirations.
The agency also reported that the U.S. may be willing to recognize Russian control over Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula as part of a broader peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv.
