The United States will provide Ukraine with intelligence to carry out long-range missile strikes on Russia’s energy infrastructure.
The Wall Street Journal reported this, citing U.S. officials.
The publication says President Donald Trump recently signed authorization for U.S. intelligence agencies and the Pentagon to provide Kyiv assistance in striking targets on Russian territory. U.S. officials are asking NATO allies to offer similar support, the sources told the paper.
The expanded intelligence-sharing with Kyiv is the latest sign that Trump is deepening support for Ukraine as his efforts to advance peace talks have stalled.
Officials say the administration will, for the first time, provide assistance enabling Ukraine to use missiles to strike energy facilities located deep inside Russia.
Providing intelligence would allow Ukraine to more effectively attack refineries, pipelines, power plants and other infrastructure far from its borders, with the aim of depriving the Kremlin of revenues and oil needed to continue the war.
The U.S. is also considering supplying Tomahawk and Barracuda missiles, as well as other U.S. ground- and air-launched missiles with ranges of roughly 500 miles (800 km), other administration officials said.
They added that no decision has yet been made on exactly what, if anything, will be sent to Ukraine.
Intelligence combined with more powerful weapons could have a far greater effect than Ukraine’s previous strikes on Russia, inflicting more damage on energy infrastructure and tying up Russian air defenses.
U.S. officials are awaiting written instructions from the White House before sharing the necessary intelligence, one source said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last week hinted that he had asked President Trump for Tomahawks.
Vice President J.D. Vance said on Sunday on Fox News that the U.S. is considering Ukraine’s request.
