The European Union is closely monitoring the situation in Kazakhstan and urging all parties to avoid escalation and violence.

This was reported by UA with reference to a statement published on the website of the EU foreign policy service.

“We encourage everyone to act responsibly and with restraint. Refrain from actions that could lead to further escalation of violence. By recognizing the right to peaceful demonstrations, the EU expects them to remain non-violent” – the statement said.

The EU calls on the Kazakh authorities to respect the fundamental right to peaceful protest, to be proportionate in the use of force in protecting security interests and to comply with international obligations.

The European Union also expects Kazakhstan to fulfill its obligations, including freedom of the press and access to information on the Internet and offline.

To remind, on January 2, protests erupted in Kazakhstan against a 2-2.5-fold increase in the price of liquefied gas to 120 tenge (USD 0.28). Then thousands of people went to rallies, in particular, in the largest cities of Zhanaozen and Aktau. Demonstrators announced an indefinite action.
