Ukraine won its third and fourth medals at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo: fencer Artem Manko won a silver medal in wheelchair fencing. Yelizaveta Mereshko won “gold” in swimming.
UA reports this with reference to paralympic.org.
Artem Manko’s final fight against Chinese Li Hao ended with a score of 15:12 in favor of Hao. The Ukrainian derby took place in the semifinal match, where Artem Manko proved to be stronger than the 2016 Paralympic champion Andriy Demchuk.
This is the first individual award at the world level for Manko. Now the Ukrainian competes in the Paralympic category “A”, which includes athletes who can control the body well, and the functioning of the fencing arm does not depend on their injury.
Yelizaveta Mereshko became the first in the 50-meter freestyle. For Mereshko, this is the fifth “gold” in her career. In 2016, at the Games in Rio de Janeiro, she won the distances of 50, 100, 400 meters in freestyle and 100 meters in backstroke swimming.
To remind, Ukrainian fencer Yevhenia Breus won a bronze medal, and swimmer Anton Kol won silver at the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.
To remind, the XVI Summer Paralympic Games officially started on August 24 in Tokyo. Ukraine is represented by 143 athletes who will compete in 15 sports.
