UATV English reports that Ukraine plans to begin localized production of Gripen fighter jets as early as 2033, according to Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal.
Speaking at a briefing following a meeting of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief’s Staff, Shmyhal said a key memorandum was signed yesterday between a Ukrainian company and Sweden’s Saab, laying the groundwork for future production of the aircraft in Ukraine.
“We expect that starting from 2033, Gripen production in Ukraine will be significantly localized — from major assembly to the manufacturing of individual components,” he stated.
The minister emphasized that Ukraine is simultaneously insisting on deliveries of Gripen C and D aircraft beginning in 2026. Kyiv and its partners also discussed launching pilot and mechanic training in early 2026 to ensure that Ukrainian personnel are ready once the first jets arrive.
According to Shmyhal, the sides agreed to establish two working groups:
- A technical group to prepare for the arrival and operation of the aircraft in Ukraine.
- A financial group to work through the details of what he described as the largest defense contract ever concluded on the European continent, requiring extensive preparation.
“This is a landmark agreement — for us, for Sweden, and for Europe as a whole,” Shmyhal noted.
Earlier, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the necessary conditions are being created for a major export deal to provide Ukraine with Gripen fighter jets.
