The Crimea Platform International Summit, held on August 23, could be a starting point for creating effective international mechanisms for the de-occupation of Crimea.
Honorary member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), member of the Verkhovna Rada of the 8th convocation, ex-president of the PACE and honored lawyer of Ukraine Georgii Logvinskyi told this in an interview with “Crimea.Realties” project, UA informs.
According to him, such measures as the Crimean Platform return the issue of the occupied Crimea to the global agenda.
“In my opinion, the Crimea Platform is a node of time. We all remember how in the first months after the annexation of Crimea by Russia, this topic was on the agenda and provoked sharp reactions from the international community. But over time, the sharpness of perception blunted, which plays into Russia’s main goal – to turn the occupation of the peninsula into a “frozen conflict”. That is why such measures are important, because they return Crimea to the global agenda and, as far as possible, link its occupation with its consequences in the present and in the future” – Logvinskyi said.
He stressed that the very fact of participation of such a great number of countries in signing of the Crimea Declaration is extremely significant from the point of view of geopolitics, because it shows that all summit participants do not recognize the occupation of Crimea as a “frozen conflict”.
According to the Honored Lawyer of Ukraine, the declaration refers to a number of previously adopted international documents on Crimea, which, in turn, are already binding.
“But I emphasize once again that the main significance of the Crimea Platform is to return the issue of the occupation of Crimea to the international agenda. In my opinion, from a month to six months it will remain the most relevant on the agenda, and the most important question that arises now is – what are our partners who have signed the final document ready to do to create an effective mechanism for de-occupation of Crimea?” – Georgii Logvinskyi asks.
To remind, earlier Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba reported that the Crimean platform will work at three levels: intergovernmental, interparliamentary, and expert level.
