NATO and U.S. authorities are in close contact regarding force deployment after Romania’s Defense Ministry announced that allies had been informed of Washington’s plans to reduce the number of U.S. troops stationed on NATO’s eastern flank, Reuters reports, citing a NATO official.

“NATO and U.S. authorities are in close contact regarding our overall force posture to ensure that NATO maintains its strong ability to deter and defend. The U.S. authorities informed NATO in advance about this adjustment,” the official said on Wednesday.

He emphasized that adjustments in U.S. force numbers are not unusual, adding that even with this change, the U.S. military presence in Europe remains larger than it has been for many years.

Earlier, Romania’s Defense Ministry confirmed that several NATO allies had been notified of U.S. plans to scale down forces stationed on the eastern flank, including those at the Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base in Romania.

Meanwhile, Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that Warsaw had not received any information from Washington regarding a possible reduction of U.S. troops in Poland.
