NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has warned Russian leader Vladimir Putin that a nuclear war can never be won and must never be fought, Reuters reports, according to UATV English.

Rutte said the success of NATO’s annual nuclear exercises earlier this month gave him “absolute confidence in the credibility of NATO’s nuclear deterrent” amid ongoing threats from Moscow.

He stressed that despite Russia’s “dangerous and reckless nuclear rhetoric,” people in NATO countries should not panic, as the Alliance maintains a powerful deterrent capable of preventing escalation.

Rutte added: “Putin must know that a nuclear war can never be won and can never be fought.”

Putin has repeatedly issued nuclear threats since launching the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Last month, he claimed Russia could use nuclear weapons if struck by conventional missiles on its territory, and said any attack on Russia backed by a nuclear-armed state would be treated as a joint assault.

Earlier, Rutte emphasized that international pressure on Russia is working and must be increased, as the Kremlin is running out of resources and ideas on the battlefield while Ukraine continues to defend itself with strong international support.
