Germany’s Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil has called for stronger measures against Russia ahead of the upcoming “steel summit” at the Chancellery next Thursday, UATV English reports.

According to ntv, the Social Democratic Party politician insists that Europe must “completely and as quickly as possible stop all imports of steel from Russia.”

“Steel slabs produced in Russia and processed within the EU are still exempt from sanctions,” Klingbeil criticized.

Steel slabs are a raw material used for manufacturing sheets and strips.

“You can’t explain to any worker in our steel industry why Europe still keeps its market open for Putin,” Klingbeil argued.

Earlier, on October 23, the European Union officially approved its 19th package of sanctions against Russia.

This package includes a ban on importing Russian LNG — effective in six months for short-term contracts and from January 1, 2027, for long-term ones. It also imposed restrictions on 117 additional ships in Russia’s “shadow fleet,” bringing the total number of sanctioned vessels to 558.

The upcoming 20th EU sanctions package is expected to include additional tariffs on goods from Russia and Belarus, as well as new sanctions targeting Russia’s energy and financial sectors.
