Russian troops concentrated near Ukraine’s borders will not be enough for a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but enough to create additional hotbeds of instability.
This opinion was expressed by the expert of the Center for Military Legal Research Oleksandr Musienko in the program “Ukraine in fact” on UA TV channel.
Thus, Russia may try to put pressure on the Ukrainian authorities.
“According to various estimates, today between 70,000 and 100,000 Russian servicemen are stationed near Ukraine’s borders. Such a contingent is not enough for a full-scale invasion to occupy, for example, the left bank of our country or other areas. In order to create some more centers of instability and hotspots next to the occupied part of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Maybe from the north, and maybe from the south. For what? In order to put pressure on the Ukrainian authorities. Because in Russia, an argument is always a force or a threat” – the expert explained.
In addition to the external scenario, the Kremlin may consider the internal Ukrainian scenario – internal destabilization.
“We are simulating the situation – Russian troops, for example, are crossing the border, invading our territory. At present, certain groups inside Ukraine are beginning to raise the wave that “the authorities are not in control of the situation, they cannot do anything, they cannot resist.” Is it profitable for Russia? Absolutely profitable. Why? Internal instability. Or the second scenario is to first destabilize the situation so that mass riots begin, and take advantage of that” – he continued.
Therefore, Ukrainian society and the political sector, especially in these circumstances, must show responsibility and unite in the face of the Russian threat.
“That is why we as a society must all be responsible. And politicians – even more so. We must understand that security depends on ourselves. Sometimes, even with different political views and positions, we still have to control our emotions, realizing that when there is a threat of aggression and confrontation, we still need to be united. And it is our unity that is one of the safeguards against full-scale aggression and one of the tools to protect our country” – Musienko concluded.
