Four years ago, on March 31, 2022, Bucha in the Kyiv Region was liberated from Russian troops. On that day, the Defense Forces of Ukraine established control over the city, which became a symbol of resilience and tragedy, reports UATV English.
It was a turning point that marked the failure of the aggressor’s attempt to seize the capital.
Already on April 1, the last Russian units left Hostomel, and the following day the entire Kyiv region was de-occupied. In the liberated territories, numerous war crimes committed by Russian troops were documented — looting, torture, violence, and the killing of civilians.
According to the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, more than 9,000 crimes were committed in the Bucha district during 33 days of Russian occupation alone. More than 1,400 civilians were killed, including 37 children.
Intercepted radio communications of Russian military personnel regarding mass killings in Bucha indicate that these were not random actions, but a strategy by Russia to intimidate Ukrainians.
It is also recalled that on March 16, 2022, the Russian army struck the Mariupol Drama Theatre with an aerial bomb. At the time of the attack, civilians were sheltering inside the building. On the fourth anniversary of the tragedy, a symbolic memorial event titled “We Will Meet at the Drama” was held in Odesa in honor of the victims.
