Why is Russia’s war against Ukraine more reminiscent of the First World War than the modern one? What tactics have been chosen in the Russian army and is it producing results? Israeli military expert Yigal Levin spoke about this in an interview as part of the FREEDOM marathon on the UA TV channel.
The expert explained why the Russians are losing the initiative in this war:
“Now Ukraine has begun to conduct offensive operations near Izyum (Kharkiv region). We have liberated settlements there. And there we have much more success. Therefore, the measures taken by Ukraine are forcing Russia to react. They lose the initiative. But they will try to start a big offensive somewhere, in many ways in order to seize the initiative back.”
Levin told why August and September are the decisive months in the war:
“This is due to weather conditions. Further, there will be rains, mud, storms, downpours, swamps, floods, river outlets, floods and so on. A bunch of factors. The war will continue under these conditions. But it will be very limited.”
He is convinced that Russia is transferring a large amount of equipment to the right bank of the Dnipro in order to keep Kherson under their control:
“You can transfer equipment as much as you like, but they have no throughput. These pontoon half-measures are 3-5 hours for a small pile of equipment. This is not a bridge over which you can endlessly drive echelons. The bridges are under the fire control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. But they still continue to transport equipment with pontoons. It’s drop by drop. You cannot supply a large group drop by drop. Therefore, I am sure that they are throwing units there for defense, in order to still keep Kherson.”
The military expert argued why Russia’s war against Ukraine is similar to World War I:
“In fact, we see that everything is very similar to the First World War. We have a front that moves very slowly and often does not move at all. We have a huge amount of artillery that is used by Russia, and we see barrage tactics.
This is the First World War. We saw this lunar landscape into which Russia turns entire cities, erasing them from the face of the earth.
But we also have notes of modern war, a new one. These are high-precision systems – they can level and radically change the picture on the battlefield. This applies, among other things, to all weapons transferred to Ukraine by Western partners.”
We discussed the lack of people in the occupying army, the possibility of mobilization in the Russian Federation and the threat of a second attack on Kyiv:
The Russians do not have enough people in fact. For such large fronts, more people are needed. And they don’t have enough people.
They do not have the infrastructure and commanders to mobilize. Let them announce. It will be a farce. Putin is insane, he can announce anything. Let him announce. Let’s see how it all will look.
The chances today are small that they will go to Kyiv. But they are.
While there is a full-scale war with Russia, all the cities of Ukraine are under threat.
