Ukraine’s international partners: the European Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, the United Nations Development Program and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development have issued a joint statement establishing the Ethics Council to the High Council of Justice.
This is reported by UA with reference to a Facebook message from the US Embassy in Ukraine.
“Today, we, Ukraine’s international partners who support the reform of the judicial system in Ukraine, welcome the establishment of the Ethics Council at the legislative level” – the statement said.
The Ethics Council will take on the important task of ensuring that the members of the High Council of Justice, the highest judicial body in Ukraine, meet the criteria of professional ethics and integrity.
The establishment of the Ethics Council is an important step of the Judicial Reform Strategy approved by the President of Ukraine in June 2021 and it is also required by the Law on the Reform of the High Council of Justice passed by the Verkhovna Rada in July 2021.
Three international experts – retired high-ranking judges from the USA and the UK and a former General Prosecutor of Estonia – will work together with three Ukrainian judges in the Ethics Council to promote judicial integrity, a key demand of Ukrainian citizens and both the Ukrainian and international business community.
“We look forward to supporting the noble mission of the Ethics Council and further supporting Ukraine’s efforts for a comprehensive, holistic judicial reform by providing our full policy and technical assistance” – the US Embassy said.
To remind, the first composition of the Ethics Council was formed in Ukraine
