Europe should strengthen its defense capabilities without duplicating NATO’s role, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said in an interview with TRT HaberUATV English reports.

Kallas stressed that the European Union works closely with the Alliance to avoid creating parallel structures while enhancing Europe’s security.

She also dismissed the idea of establishing a single European army, arguing that the EU’s priority should instead be increasing defense investment, expanding its defense industry, and pursuing joint procurement of military equipment.

“Not every EU member state can create a second army under European command. We need to strengthen our defense capabilities and invest more in defense, but it is equally important to act together because the threats are regional, and therefore the response must also be regional,” Kallas said.

Her remarks come as European allies continue to increase defense spending and deepen cooperation in response to growing security challenges across the continent.
