The European Commission has begun disbursing €3.9 billion to Ukraine as the first tranche of an approximately €6 billion package dedicated to drone procurement, describing unmanned systems as a key capability in Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression, UATV English reports.
“Ukraine’s ingenuity lies at the heart of its success in resisting Russia’s full-scale invasion. We want to support that ingenuity,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.
“Today, we are releasing the first €3.9 billion tranche for advanced drone technologies to strengthen Ukraine’s defense. And there is more to come. These investments will help Ukraine protect its citizens, defend its sovereignty, and strengthen Europe’s security.”
Von der Leyen reaffirmed the EU’s long-term commitment to Ukraine, adding that Europe “stands firmly with Ukraine for as long as it takes to achieve a just and lasting peace.”
The funding is part of the European Union’s broader support package aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities through expanded production and procurement of advanced unmanned technologies.
