Norway has summoned the Russian ambassador in Oslo to formally protest recent threats from Moscow regarding potential attacks on diplomatic missions in Kyiv.
According to The Guardian, Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide confirmed that Russia’s senior diplomat in Norway was called in to “express protest against threats directed at foreign personnel in Ukraine made by Russia in recent days.”, UATV English reports.
“We also emphasized that we condemn Russia’s violent attacks on Kyiv carried out over the weekend. Russia was behind large-scale drone attacks and also used the Oreshnik missile against Kyiv for the first time. This is unacceptable,” the Norwegian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Earlier, Yurii Ihnat, head of communications for the Ukrainian Air Force, stated that Russia had launched an “Oreshnik” missile toward the Bila Tserkva area in Kyiv region, with the launch reportedly carried out from the Kapustin Yar testing ground in Russia.
Norway’s move follows a similar step by the European Union, which summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires after Moscow warned that Western diplomats in Kyiv could be at risk during future large-scale strikes on the Ukrainian capital.
On Monday, May 25, Russia’s Foreign Ministry published a statement claiming that Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, acting on instructions from Russian President Vladimir Putin, allegedly informed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a phone call about Moscow’s intention to continue strikes on Kyiv and “advised” the evacuation of diplomatic personnel.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry thanked all foreign diplomatic missions continuing to operate in Ukraine during the war and stated that Kyiv is prepared to assist with additional security measures for missions that request such support.
