German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius will visit Lithuania on Monday to inaugurate a logistics support center for the German brigade stationed in Rukla, according to LRT.
The opening ceremony will also be attended by Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovilė Šakalienė, Commander of the 1st Division of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Aurelijus Alasauskas, and Brigadier General Christoph Huber, commander of the German brigade deployed in Lithuania.
The permanent logistics center, built on the site of a former motor pool in Rukla, will serve as a maintenance and storage hub for military equipment for both the German brigade and the NATO multinational battlegroup.
The facility covers nearly 20 hectares and includes over 15,000 square meters of workshops, offices, warehouses, and other buildings, along with 120,000 square meters of paved areas and roads.
The project also involved upgrading local roads, installing engineering networks, adding a solar power station, and implementing electronic and physical security systems.
Construction, funded by Berlin and carried out by a German contractor with 15 Lithuanian construction companies as subcontractors, was executed through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency.
Germany plans to deploy a brigade of 4,000–5,000 troops in Lithuania by the end of 2027, with most stationed in Rūdninkai and engineering and reconnaissance units in Rukla.
Currently, around 400 German troops serve in Lithuania, with the number expected to rise to 500 by year-end. Germany has also recently announced readiness to strengthen its presence along NATO’s eastern border in response to Russian drone incursions into Poland.
