German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that his country is prepared to purchase U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems and transfer them to Ukraine.
His remarks, made on the sidelines of the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome, were reported by Reuters.
Merz said that last week he asked U.S. President Donald Trump to supply Patriot systems to Ukraine.
“We are also ready to purchase additional Patriot systems from the United States in order to provide them to Ukraine,” he said.
At the same time, the Chancellor acknowledged that the U.S. military also needs these systems, but noted, “they have plenty of them.”
“It has not yet been decided whether the delivery will take place,” Merz added.
Earlier, it was reported that Germany was engaged in “intensive negotiations” with the United States regarding the provision of Patriot systems to Ukraine.
According to Axios, Trump has already ordered the delivery of 10 Patriot interceptor missiles to Ukraine and is pressuring Germany to sell one of its Patriot batteries to Kyiv.
