In the margins of the NATO Summit in Vilnius, with the participation of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the leaders of G7 countries agreed on a Joint Declaration of Support for Ukraine, in which they reaffirmed that the security of our country is an integral part of the security of the Euro-Atlantic region.
This is an important step in shaping the future system of guaranteeing Ukraine’s security until it becomes a full-fledged NATO member.
The approval of this document is the result of many months of work by the Ukrainian team with partners from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and others.
Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida noted that the G7 Summit, which took place in May in the Japanese city of Hiroshima with the participation of a wide range of partner countries, emphasized the inadmissibility of attempts to change the status quo in any country in the world by force. The need to protect a free and open international order based on the rule of law was also emphasized.
“I feel that the fact that we, the G7 leaders and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, have gathered again today is of great importance,” Fumio Kishida said.
He emphasized that the declaration is open for accession by other countries that share the intention to support Ukraine and expressed hope that many states will make such a decision.
“The G7 will continue to stand by Ukraine, and our solidarity will never waver,” the Japanese Prime Minister emphasized.
U.S. President Joseph Biden emphasized that the G7 Joint Declaration contains long-term commitments to support Ukraine.
“We will help Ukraine build a strong and capable defense across land, air and sea. It will be the force of stability in the region and deter against any threats. I want to thank my fellow G7 leaders and President Zelenskyy for their work to make this happen,” Joseph Biden said.
He emphasized that the G7 countries in this declaration expressed their commitment to support Ukraine for as long as it takes as it defends its freedom and rebuilds the future.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that the current NATO Summit is ending with a very necessary, significant success for Ukraine.
The Head of State thanked Joseph Biden, Fumio Kishida, as well as President of France Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Rishi Sunak, Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni, Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz, President of the European Council Charles Michel and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, as well as President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
“I am grateful to all the leaders, all NATO countries for their very practical and unprecedented support for Ukraine, considering the decades of our relations. Today, we have security guarantees for Ukraine on the way to NATO – a very important package of guarantees. We are agreeing with the G7 on the framework of security guarantees that shall be further extended through arrangements with our key partners, bilateral and multilateral agreements,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
The Head of State emphasized that the Ukrainian delegation is returning home with a significant security victory for Ukraine and its citizens.
“This opens up completely new security opportunities for us. I thank everyone who worked for this, I thank you, dear colleagues,” the President said.
The declaration is a general framework document. The next step is to conclude a system of bilateral security agreements between Ukraine and the guarantor countries in the framework of multilateral cooperation.
After the adoption of the declaration, each of the countries will start working with Ukraine to develop specific and long-term commitments that will ensure our country’s capability to defend itself now and deter Russian aggression in the future.
