The European Union will not fence itself off from Belarus and will not finance its construction.
This was announced by the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen following a two-day EU summit, UA reports.
At the same time, the idea of separating from Belarus with a barrier was supported by its neighboring countries – Poland, Latvia and Lithuania. These countries were promised financial support at the summit, as well as means to strengthen the protection of the EU’s external borders. EU leaders also discussed the humanitarian situation on the Polish-Belarusian border, which has killed nine people.
“We are very concerned about the situation on the border with Belarus. We see the behavior of the Belarusian government as a hybrid attack. The life of even one person cannot be used to resolve political issues. Migration is a tool to put pressure on the European Union. We will continue to put pressure on the Lukashenko regime” – the European Commission head said.
Poland, Lithuania and Latvia have seen an increased flow of illegal migrants trying to enter the EU through Belarus in recent months. The European Union accuses Belarus of creating chaos near the EU’s borders by refusing to allow illegal migrants from the Middle East and Africa who try to enter the EU, stay in Belarus.
Earlier it was reported that Lithuania plans to build a wall along the border with Belarus.
