In the European Parliament, louder appeals to EU leaders to boycott the World Cup scheduled to take place this year in Russia are heard.

It was discussed on Wednesday in Brussels in the European Parliament within the framework of the conference “4 Years of Occupation Ways to Support Crimea and the Crimean Tatars” with the participation of the Crimean Tatar leaders Mustafa Dzhemilev, Ilmi Umerov and Akhtem Chiygoz, as reported by UNIAN.

“World Cup, which will be held in Russia, is approaching and if many countries ignore it, wouldn’t that be a serious blow to Russia’s image?” Umerov said. In the closing speech,  Member of the European Parliament Petras Auštrevičius said that a letter will be prepared with a corresponding appeal to EU leaders. “We will initiate a series of appeals to the leaders of European countries not to participate in the World Cup, because it will be used against European values. Russia uses sporting events for political purposes”,  the European Parliamentarian said.
