U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance confirmed that Donald Trump’s administration is holding discussions on the potential provision of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine.
He said this in an interview with Fox News.
Vance noted that supplying Tomahawks to Ukraine is “a matter on which the final decision will be made by the president” of the United States, Donald Trump.
“The president will do what best serves the interests of the United States of America. That is the driving force behind his decisions in foreign and defense policy,” he added.
The U.S. vice president stated that “right now, we are holding talks on this matter (regarding the Tomahawks – Ed.).”
Earlier, media reported that during a recent meeting with Donald Trump in New York, Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed the transfer of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine.
Commenting on reports that he had requested Tomahawks from Trump, Zelenskyy said the U.S. president received a request “with details and illustrations” of everything that “Ukraine wants.”
Vance also claimed that in recent weeks, Russia had refused to participate in bilateral meetings with Ukraine, as well as trilateral ones involving U.S. representatives.
Vance commented on recent statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, in which he critically assessed Russia’s condition and suggested that Ukraine could regain territory occupied by Russian forces.
According to him, such remarks are driven by “changes in the reality on the ground,” where Russia is losing significant numbers of troops and making no substantial territorial gains.
“We remain committed to peace, but that requires willingness from both sides. And unfortunately, in recent weeks we’ve seen that the Russians refuse to take part in any bilateral meetings with the Ukrainians,” the U.S. vice president said.
“They refuse to engage in any trilateral meetings where the president or another member of the administration could sit down at the negotiating table with both the Russians and Ukrainians,” he added.
Vance urged Russia to “wake up and accept the reality” that it is losing many people and “has little to show for it.”
“How many more people are they willing to kill for the sake of very minor, if any, military advantage on the ground? I hope the answer is not many, but certainly our position is that we will continue working toward peace and hope the Russians finally wake up and see the reality on the ground,” he said.
As a reminder, on September 23, Donald Trump unexpectedly made optimistic remarks about Ukraine’s chances of regaining control over its territory within its internationally recognized borders.
According to media reports, European officials reacted to this post by the U.S. president with very cautious optimism.
