European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius has urged a dramatic shift in Europe’s defense strategy to address potential threats from Russia by 2030.
“We must transition from gradual improvements to a ‘big bang’ approach in strengthening our defense capabilities. The key question is whether we have enough political will to protect ourselves,” Kubilius stated in an interview with AFP.
He proposed a rapid investment of 500 billion euros in defense over the next decade, emphasizing the importance of long-term contracts with industry and joint financing for orders.
Kubilius clarified that the push to enhance Europe’s defense readiness is driven by the threat from Vladimir Putin, not the return of Donald Trump. “Sometimes I think we should spend as much time on defense planning as we do discussing Trump,” he remarked.
