Russia uses its athletes to promote political narratives, – Ukraine’s MP Beleniuk

Russia, which claims above all that sport is outside of politics, uses athletes to promote political narratives. Olympic champion, MP Zhan Beleniuk announced this today, January 30, on the air of FREEDOM TV channel.

“Putin really likes to place champions with medals around him and tell them how great they are, that Russia is a powerful state, what a strong president they have, and so on,” he emphasized.

The People’s Deputy noted that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) says that athletes who did not support the war have the right to perform.

“But almost a whole hour has passed, we have not seen a single athlete of the level of world champion or Olympic medalist who would publicly declare that he condemns the actions of the Kremlin in this war,” said Beleniuk.

The Olympic champion drew parallels with the Third Reich.

“If we recall the Olympic Games, which were held in Berlin in 1936, when there was a Third Reich, we can compare how similar regimes to the one currently operating in the Russian Federation used these competitions to promote their specific political narratives that the Aryan the race is the strongest, they are the most successful, and so on. Russia works in exactly the same way,” he reminded.

Beleniuk expressed the opinion that Russia needs the Olympics precisely in order to promote its vision of the situation in the world and will renew the agenda necessary for the Kremlin.
