FREEDOM in June: YouTube trending videos, state awards and thematic special broadcasts

In June, two videos by FREEDOM, a channel for Russian-speaking viewers abroad, were on the trends of the Russian segment of YouTube: about the US support for Ukraine in the war with Russia, the losses of the Russian army and the crisis in Russia, including the growing interethnic conflicts and terrorist threats.

YouTube trends included a commentary by political scientist Morozov for FREEDOM about the terrorist attack in Dagestan, which was a consequence of Hamas globalization and a signal for the Russian authorities to pay attention to problems in the regions. 98.1 % of the commentary was viewed from abroad, of which 74.4 % were views from Russia, 3.7 % from Kazakhstan, 1.9 % from Uzbekistan, and 1.8 % from the United States.

In total, the broadcast was viewed 245 000 times. International news in the context of the war in Ukraine attracted high interest of the foreign broadcasting audience. 84.1 % of the foreign audience, of which 55.4 % were viewed from Russia, 3.4 % from Kazakhstan, 3.4 % from Belarus and 2.3 % from Germany received a fragment of the pre-election debate between Trump and Biden, in which Biden focused on the Kremlin’s failed attempt to capture Kyiv and the many thousands of losses of the Russian army. In total, it was viewed 446 000 times. The video hit the trends of the Russian segment of YouTube.

The most views during the month in YouTube FREEDOM, 590 000, of which 75.7% were from abroad, collected the next episode of “Front News” about Ukrainian drones, which reduced the combat capability of the enemy army and forced it to retreat from outskirts of Vovchansk. 40.5 % of the episode’s views came from Russia; 6 % from Kazakhstan; 3.6 % from Belarus; and 2 % from Germany.

To the Global Peace Summit in Switzerland on FREEDOM and on YouTube-channel UATV.English a number of special projects aired, among which – two special marathons in English and Russian languages live, devoted to key themes and the first results of the meeting of world leaders in Swiss Bürgenstock, streamings of the main events of the summit in English and Russian languages.

Interviews, speeches and comments by the Ukrainian president traditionally arouse high interest among Russian-speaking viewers abroad. A fragment of Zelenskyy’s speech at the Peace Summit, in which he told about the plans to firmly establish the real end of the war during the next summit with Russia’s participation, received 94.3 % of views from abroad. In total, the fragment was viewed 341 000 times, of which 64.3 % were from Russia; 8.8 % from Uzbekistan; 4 % from Kazakhstan; and 2 % from Kyrgyzstan.

The news coverage of the summit was also covered by the thematic issue of the Special Report project “Peace Summit. From Formula to End the War” with host Maksym Urlapov, in which the authors analyzed how the summit in Switzerland could be the first real opportunity to bring the war in Ukraine closer to an end, how states with influence over Russia could force Putin to negotiate on Ukrainian terms, and why Putin, whose power has been based on wars of conquest for decades, is so afraid of this conference. The issue received 318,000 views, 83.6% of which were from abroad, of which 44.7% were views from Russia, 6.4% from Uzbekistan, 5.7% from Kazakhstan, and 3.2% from Kyrgyzstan. Top cities by views: Moscow, Makhachkala, Krasnodar, Rostov-on-Don and Sochi.

June saw the launch of a new project Failed State with Denys Pokhyla – an informative and educational programme that ironically talks about the destruction of Russia’s reputation and its path from success to failure. The premiere episode is devoted to the degradation of Russian football. The programme explains how the Russian Federation, which hosted the World Cup six years ago, lost influence over FIFA and UEFA officials after a full-scale invasion and turned into a football outsider.

Total number of views of content under FREEDOM brand on various digital-platforms of SE “The International Broadcasting Multimedia Platform of Ukraine” (YouTube, Facebook, Telegram, X, TikTok) and on platforms of partners in June was 197,9 million.* For all period of work this indicator has reached 10,8 billion views. The average weighted rate of views from abroad for YouTube-channels of SE “The International Broadcasting Multimedia Platform of Ukraine” and partners increased up to 78,8%, and for YouTube-channels of Ukrainian foreign broadcasting FREEDOM and FREEDOM.LIVE up to 90% from abroad, including 55,5% from the Russian Federation. The most views were from the following cities: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar, Tashkent and Nizhny Novgorod.

On the occasion of the Constitution Day, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has marked with state awards employees of SE “The International Broadcasting Multimedia Platform of Ukraine” for significant services in strengthening of the Ukrainian statehood, courage and selflessness shown in defence of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, personal contribution to development of various spheres of public life, conscientious fulfilment of professional duty. The Kharkiv correspondent of FREEDOM channel Natalia Piddubna (Bilokudrya) is awarded by the order of Princess Olha of III degree, the operator of SE “The International Broadcasting Multimedia Platform of Ukraine” Oleksandr Shkot was awarded the order of Merits of III degree.
