China is a very important partner for Russia, helping to circumvent sanctions and supporting the economy. Political support for the Russian Federation from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) also plays an important role in world politics. German political scientist, analyst at the Stockholm Center for East European Studies Andreas Umland spoke about this on the FREEDOM TV channel.

“China is now a very important partner for Russia. I would even say a vital partner. Because without Chinese economic support, sanctions would have been more effective, and the Russian economy would have been in a completely different state,” he emphasized.

Vladimir Putin is preparing to travel to China for negotiations with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“China’s political support in the UN and the Security Council is important for Russia. China also has its own interests. He uses Russia to compete or confront the West. China is one of those countries where Putin can go after an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court,” the expert noted.

China is a difficult target for the application of secondary sanctions by Western countries, the German political scientist believes.

“The general sanctions policy has always suffered from the fact that it initially concerned only Russian companies, and not those that cooperate with Russia. The lesson of two years of ineffective sanctions has shown that it is impossible to do without secondary sanctions. That is, it is necessary not only to restrict the country that is under sanctions but also all actors, firms, countries, and entrepreneurs who violate this sanctions regime. China in this regard is the most difficult target in applying such secondary sanctions. Because China has a big economy,” he explained.
