Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris spoke at Washington’s Ellipse Park, where nearly four years ago Republican Donald Trump urged his supporters to march on the Capitol.
In her remarks, reported by Politico, Harris emphasized that the former president is “unstable, obsessed with revenge, and seeks unlimited power,” contrasting her vision of a “bright future for America, free from authoritarian tendencies and divisive conflicts.”
Harris stated it’s time for new leaders who can unite the country “instead of perpetuating the divisiveness Trump sowed,” urging Americans to stop blaming one another and start working together. The location, Ellipse Park, underscored the contrast with Trump, who, from this very spot in January 2021, helped incite the unrest that led to the Capitol attack.
“We know who Donald Trump is: he’s the one who stood in this very place almost four years ago and sent an armed crowd to the U.S. Capitol to overturn the will of the people in a free and fair election,” Harris said.
Harris also highlighted the importance of serving all citizens, regardless of party, and pledged to seek compromises for shared goals. Her address targeted undecided voters, particularly young people, suburban women, and moderate Republicans.
Journalists noted that Harris’s message stood in stark contrast to Trump’s recent Madison Square Garden rally, where his speech stirred controversy due to its racist, sexist, and coarse remarks. Harris’s campaign aims to leverage these statements to draw more voters to her side.
Reports indicate that while Harris maintains a national lead over Trump, the margin has narrowed. Other polls show the two candidates now neck and neck, both nationally and in key swing states.
