Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy explained that he considered it necessary to meet with both U.S. presidential candidates, as either of them could assume the top office, and Ukraine counts on continued support after the elections and must plan this cooperation now.

Zelenskyy made this statement during a brief interaction with the media alongside Donald Trump before their meeting.

“It is very important to share our plans on how to strengthen Ukraine. And, of course, we must address this now—because we don’t know whom the American people will choose as president. But we understand that we won’t stop Putin by November,” Zelenskyy explained.

“We hope that U.S. strength will remain unwavering, and we count on it. That’s why I decided to meet with both candidates,” he added.

For his part, Donald Trump praised Zelenskyy’s actions during Trump’s impeachment inquiry and said that they have “a great relationship.” He made a similar remark about his relations with Russia’s leader and again expressed confidence that he could quickly end the war.

It is worth noting that the meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump in New York at Trump Tower took place a day after tensions escalated when Trump supporters accused the Ukrainian president of “interfering in the election” and aiding Biden by criticizing Trump’s “peace plan.”

Additionally, House Speaker Mike Johnson refused to meet with Zelenskyy. Initially, it was believed that the meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy would not happen, but at the last minute, Trump agreed to it.
