President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claims that he had constructive interactions with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and believes that, under the incoming administration, the war in Ukraine will “end sooner.”

Zelenskyy shared this perspective in an interview with Ukrainian Radio, excerpts of which were cited by Suspilne.

He emphasized that Ukraine had the opportunity to present its arguments for peace. “The foundation we stand on has been heard by him (Trump). I didn’t hear anything opposing our position,” Zelenskyy stated.

The president dismissed the notion that Trump would pressure Ukraine into negotiations with Russia.

“We are an independent country. During this war, our people and I personally have demonstrated in talks with the U.S., with Trump, with Biden, and with European leaders that the ‘sit down and listen’ rhetoric doesn’t work with us,” Zelenskyy affirmed.

He underscored the importance of achieving a just peace for Ukraine, one that ensures the sacrifices made were not in vain or imposed unfairly.

“Certainly, with the policies of this incoming team leading the White House, the war will end sooner. That is their approach, their promise to their society, and it is very important for them as well,” Zelenskyy noted.

During his campaign, Trump pledged to end the war in Ukraine quickly, though he did not specify how. Recently, he stated that his administration would focus on resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, emphasizing that “it must stop.”
