At the G7 summit in Italy, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida signed a bilateral Accord on Support for Ukraine and Cooperation between Ukraine and the Government of Japan.

The Ukraine-Japan agreement provides €4.5 billion for Ukraine in 2024 and further 10-year commitments in defence cooperation and humanitarian aid.

Hence, the amount of assistance provided by Japan since Russia’s full-scale invasion will exceed $12 billion.

Also, a great emphasis is on the recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine which is especially significant as Zelenskyy noted that Japan is “one of the world’s most economically and technologically advanced countries”.

In addition to providing non-lethal weapons to Ukraine, Japan will provide medical treatment for wounded Ukrainian soldiers, cooperate with Ukraine in the areas of intelligence and protection of classified information, strengthening the protection and reconstruction of critical infrastructure, enhancing cyber and information security, and ensuring free navigation and security of sea lanes.

“For Japan, this type of agreement and this level of support is a breakthrough. We see this and thank Japan for its unwavering solidarity with our country and people, as well as for its dedication to protecting life and international law” Zelenskyy wrote on X.
