President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has responded to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s statement about the need for concessions from Ukraine and Russia to achieve peace. In an interview with The Economist, he emphasized that the wrong diplomacy only rehabilitates Putin, who acts in the same way as Adolf Hitler.
Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine’s readiness for negotiations is already a compromise, but they are possible only if security guarantees are provided to prevent new Russian aggression.
The President compared the current situation to the history of World War II:
“Imagine that Hitler did not kill himself. Imagine that after everything he did, people would have said: “Okay, let’s look for a compromise”.
He also noted that previous agreements and ceasefires did not work, so any negotiations should be accompanied by specific security guarantees.
Earlier, the US Secretary of State said that Kyiv and Moscow would have to make concessions, as the war had reached a “stalemate.” He also noted that Ukraine should not hope to return to the borders of 2012-2014.
This statement caused a wave of criticism, as such initiatives could legalize Russian aggression and encourage future wars.
