Young Bandura Players Give New Life to Ancient Ukrainian Folk Music

18-year-old Dmytro Kuzmych is a senior at a Kyiv Mmusic college in Kyiv. Instead of studying how to play the electric guitar, Dmytro decided to go a more traditional route. He chose the ancient Ukrainian instrument – The lyra, and says that he did so because of the instrument’s beautiful sound.

Dmytro says that his friends have reacted to his choice of instrument with admiration. The 18-year-old hopes to inspire as many people as possible with the traditions of Ukrainian music. After all, Ukrainians managed to created unique sounds with their instruments.

This is how the Ukrainian CKobzar sounds. The CKobzar is an instrument similar to the bandura, but with a different, guitar-like quality. Musicians say that mastersing the CKobzar is not easy, but that the instrument has the power to touch your soul.

There are currently around 12,000 bandurists in Ukraine, and thanks to music schools like the one Dmytro Kuzmych goes to, the sound of national Ukrainian instruments grows louder with each passing year.
