{"id":418304,"date":"2019-11-11T15:30:06","date_gmt":"2019-11-11T13:30:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uatv.ua\/remembering-dissidents-self-immolation-protest-ukrainian-freedom\/"},"modified":"2019-11-11T15:30:06","modified_gmt":"2019-11-11T13:30:06","slug":"remembering-dissidents-self-immolation-protest-ukrainian-freedom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uatv.ua\/en\/remembering-dissidents-self-immolation-protest-ukrainian-freedom\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembering a Dissident&#8217;s Self-Immolation Protest for Ukrainian Freedom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/F4HJhdc1_Qs\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In November 1968, a man enveloped in flames runs through Khreshchatyk, Kyiv&#8217;s main street, and shouted, &#8220;Long live free Ukraine!&#8221; and &#8220;Invaders go home!&#8221; It was Ukrainian activist Vasyl Makukh.<\/p>\n<p>In 1946, the Soviet regime sentenced him to 10 years of hard labor \u2014 for being a reconnaissance man of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.<\/p>\n<p>After his release, it was difficult for Makukh to witness the suppression of the Ukrainian language. He began to prepare his protest in advance, against the Soviet rule of Ukraine, as well as the Soviet invasion in Czechoslovakia.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-54896 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/uatv.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Makukh-e1573462221727.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"324\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He went to church when he was visiting his sister, and confessed his sins, as Vasyl was a religious person. He said that he wanted to burn himself in protest against the Russification of Ukraine. Vasyl filled a 3-liter jar with petrol and apples. He pretended that these were canned fruits, so that no one would get suspicious. In Kyiv, he doused himself with that petrol,&#8221; said the Head of Dnipropetrovsk Regional Union of Political Prisoners, Ivan Dremliuha.<\/p>\n<p>Makukh also wrote a letter, one recently found in declassified archives. His biographer, Mykhailo Riabtsev, knows the text by heart.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ukraine&#8217;s Communist Party was like a dog, who wagged its tail near Russia&#8217;s Communist Party. Vasyl wrote in his letter that they banned and suppressed the Ukrainian language. When Makukh burned himself, the communists said he was insane. But Vasyl had clearly explained that he sacrificed himself not to the regime, but to the Ukrainian people. He added: &#8216;I want future generations to not be afraid of fighting for Ukraine,'&#8221; said Riabtsev.<\/p>\n<p>Makukh was secretly buried, so that his self-immolation would not trigger a chain of protests against Soviet authorities. They tried to hide his case in every way, but failed, Riabtsev said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-54895 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/uatv.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Viatrovych-e1573462178986.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"372\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just a few days later, the information about his self-immolation was spread by foreign media like &#8216;Radio Free Europe\/Radio Liberty&#8217; and &#8216;Voice of America&#8217;, which in the Soviet Union were called &#8220;enemy voices.&#8221; It shocked the world. Makukh became a symbol of resistance. He inspired others to constantly fight for Ukraine and its language.
