Ukrinform<\/a> reports.<\/p>\nOn Sept. 5, 1918, the Council of People’s Commissars, a Soviet government institution created after the October Revolution in 1917, issued the Decree on Red Terror which is considered to be the official beginning of repressions and mass killings carried out by Bolsheviks. According to various historians, up to 1.5 million people have been killed between 1918 and 1919.<\/p>\n
The mass repressions officially started as retribution for the assassination of Moisei Uritsky, the head of the Petrograd\u00a0Cheka, the Bolshevik secret police, and for the attempted assassination of Lenin.<\/p>\n
At first, the Red Terror started in Moscow and St. Petersburg and then spread to other republics, including Ukraine.<\/p>\n
The Red Terror started in Ukraine in January 1918 with the invasion of Red Guard units led by Mikhail Muravyov. Three to five thousand people were killed in Kyiv, mostly Ukrainian and Russian officers, those who had certificates of the Central Rada of Ukraine, representatives of the clergy, and pro-Ukrainian activists.<\/p>\n
On Dec. 3, 1918, the Russian-Bolshevik government created a specialized body in Ukraine under the name of the All-Ukrainian Extraordinary Commission on Combating Counter-Revolution, Speculation and Offenses, as a model of the All-Russian Cheka, the first Soviet secret police organization. This institution was also associated with the second Bolshevik occupation of Kyiv between February and August of 1919.<\/p>\n
Bolshevik forces carried terror tactics not only in Kyiv but throughout Ukraine: in Kharkiv, Dnipro, Poltava, Odesa and Zhytomyr. From 1917 to 1921, as a result of Bolshevik terror, the population of Crimea decreased by more than 100 thousand people.<\/p>\n
Victims of Red Terror were not only citizens who occupied a more or less high position in society: professors, doctors, engineers, party leaders, former high officials, generals, the highest spiritual persons, representatives of the merchantry and the aristocracy, but also ordinary artisans and peasants.<\/p>\n
In Ukraine, in accordance with the resolution of the Verkhovna Rada dated Feb. 8, 2018, a memorial day will be observed today. A\u00a0minute of silence to commemorate the victims\u00a0will take place at noon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
