One of them is Slovaks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Representatives of different nationalities have been living here for ages. This is why a combination of different cuisine and culture has appeared. National communities preserve their traditions. For example, this year we held the 25th \u201cGolden Nightingale\u201d &#8211; a Slovak folk song contest,&#8221; Deputy Head of the Department of Culture of the Zakarpattia Regional State Administration Ildiko Molnar said.<\/p>\n<p>The city of Uzhhorod, in Ukraine&#8217;s Zakarpattia region is located on the Ukraine-Slovakia border. In the 1920s and 1930s, the territory was part of Czechoslovakia. One of the monuments from that period is the building of the former government of Transcarpathia. It was designed by Slovak architect Frantisek Krupka. Now it belongs to the Zakarpattia Regional State Administration.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the historical building in the center of Uzhhorod houses a Ukrainian-Slovak school and a center for Slovak culture.<\/p>\n<p>One resident, Jozef Hajnis, works as a physicist. However, he believes that his main work is the revival of the national identity of the Zakarpattia Slovaks.<\/p>\n<p>Hajnis has been heading the Matica Slovenska Society for almost 30 years. He says that in the Soviet-era, the life of Slovaks wasn&#8217;t easy. The Slovak language wasn&#8217;t taught at any of the schools and the only way to preserve it was by using it in daily life in the community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There were no teachers,&#8221; he said, &#8220;When we developed the concept for the Slovak school in the Zakarpattia region, we decided that it should be bilingual. We studied the experience of national schools in Serbia, Romania, and other countries, and came to the conclusion that bilingual schools are a world trend.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Visitors to the Slovak Center can learn about the history of the Zakarpattia Slovaks and see the national costumes for themselves. Hajnis says that the Slovak community&#8217;s main achievement is the revival of the Slovak language, which was almost forgotten by the locals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m happy that today young people speak their native language much better than their parents and grandparents who never knew the language. And now the young people do. If you come to our school in Uzhhorod, you can easily communicate with the students both in Slovak and in Ukrainian,&#8221;\u00a0Hajnis said.<\/p>\n<p>Some 11 years ago, a number of dance classes were started in the village of Storozhnytsia, near Uzhhorod. Later, this led to the creation of a children&#8217;s dance group. It&#8217;s aptly named &#8211; \u201cNasha Fajta\u201d which means \u201cOur family\u201d in Slovak.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dancing cheers me up. When I just joined the group, I was worried all the time \u2013 I thought about every step I had to make. And now I&#8217;m more confident. It&#8217;s like memorizing a poem. You learn it by heart and it just flows on its own,&#8221; said one of the group&#8217;s members, Oleksandr Haydanka.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The regional government has provided the group with 25 costumes. We make the rest of the costumes ourselves. We are supported by Slovak organizations. Thanks to this, we can travel abroad and demonstrate our culture,&#8221; the group&#8217;s manager, Darinka Ograzanska said.<\/p>\n<p>Etella Kost&#8217;s granddaughter has been dancing in the group for seven years. She is proud to have been raised in Storozhnytsia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our village is ancient. It used to be called &#8216;Yovro.&#8217; Most of the residents are Slovaks. At the local school, children study the Slovak language from grade one, and get acquainted with the culture and the history of our people,&#8221; Kost said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Zakarpattia region is home to more than 90 ethnic minorities.
