Donald Trump\u2019s May visit to Beijing on 14 and 15 May 2026 is transforming the Taiwan question from a chronic flashpoint into an immediate test of the foundational principles of the Western security architecture in Asia. Xi Jinping has openly stated that Taiwan will top his agenda, whereas last year\u2019s meeting in Busan conspicuously avoided the subject.<\/p>\n

According to information cited by Taipei Times with reference to Reuters<\/a>, Beijing is demanding that Washington correct the public formula of American policy, shifting from the neutral \u201cwe do not support Taiwan\u2019s independence\u201d to the harder \u201cwe oppose Taiwan\u2019s independence.\u201d<\/p>\n

This change in language may appear to be a semantic nuance at first glance, but it would represent a fundamental reformulation of the U.S. position<\/strong> \u2014 a shift from strategic ambiguity to a de facto recognition of Chinese sovereignty over the island in an intermediate political form. For all U.S. allies in the region \u2014 from Japan to the Philippines, Australia, and South Korea \u2014 this question has become a test of whether Washington is prepared to maintain the security umbrella that has structured the Indo-Pacific order <\/strong>since the 1950s.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The context of the meeting has been shaped by several months of rapid escalation in Chinese military and political pressure. The December exercises \u201cJustice Mission 2025\u201d for the first time involved the incursion of People\u2019s Liberation Army vessels and coast guard ships into Taiwan\u2019s contiguous zone \u2014 that is, the 24-mile belt surrounding territorial waters.<\/p>\n

Analysts at The Diplomat<\/a> noted that this represents a qualitatively new form of military activity that erases the buffer zone between routine coercive pressure and an actual encroachment on sovereign territory. In the first days of April, 68 of the 135 Chinese aircraft deployed in a single operation crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait \u2014 the most brazen aerial incursion since Nancy Pelosi\u2019s visit in 2022.<\/p>\n

The political analyst emphasizes that Beijing\u2019s pressure campaign extends well beyond the military sphere. At the economic level, China has increasingly relied on selective export controls, using its dominant position in rare earth elements and critical electronic components as leverage in broader geopolitical competition.<\/p>\n

The expert further notes that political instruments have also become more prominent. Beijing has intensified contacts with Taiwan\u2019s opposition Kuomintang party, including hosting a delegation led by its chairperson, Chiang Chi-chen, in April. In his view, this reflects a broader trend in which regional allies increasingly demonstrate stronger strategic clarity regarding Taiwan than the United States itself.<\/p>\n

The analyst points out that a gradual shift in the centre of gravity of allied policy is becoming visible. Countries such as Japan, Australia, and the Philippines are assuming a more prominent role in regional security planning. Australia continues to deepen defence cooperation through AUKUS, while the Philippines has expanded American access to military facilities under the Enhanced Defence Cooperation Agreement. South Korea, meanwhile, continues to balance its security commitments against its economic dependence on China.<\/p>\n

Gladkykh stresses that Taiwan itself is responding to the deteriorating security environment by accelerating preparations for self-defence. President Lai Ching-te has pledged to increase defence spending to 3.3 percent of GDP by 2026 and to 5 percent by 2030, levels more commonly associated with states facing persistent security threats than with countries operating under routine deterrence conditions.<\/p>\n

The political analyst argues that the situations surrounding Taiwan and Ukraine can no longer be viewed separately. Rather, they form parts of a single strategic architecture in which developments in one theatre directly affect calculations in the other. This interconnection, he notes, is increasingly recognized across capitals ranging from Tokyo and Canberra to Warsaw and Berlin.<\/p>\n

According to Gladkykh, Xi Jinping approaches negotiations with the United States from a position shaped by long-term strategic patience. Rather than seeking dramatic breakthroughs, Beijing tends to accumulate incremental gains and subtle rhetorical shifts that may appear insignificant individually but gradually alter the broader political landscape.<\/p>\n

The expert contends that Beijing\u2019s efforts to secure changes in language regarding Taiwan fit precisely into this approach. He draws a parallel with Russia\u2019s strategy toward Ukraine between 2014 and 2022, when a series of seemingly limited international concessions gradually normalized Moscow\u2019s presence on Ukrainian territory and altered perceptions of the status quo.<\/p>\n

The author warns that if Washington demonstrates a willingness to exchange even partial concessions on Taiwan for economic or commercial agreements, Chinese leaders may interpret this as validation of their current strategy. In such a scenario, Beijing could intensify pressure through larger military exercises in the Taiwan Strait and additional restrictions targeting Taiwan\u2019s economic connections with the outside world.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, Gladkykh notes that Xi Jinping is expected to visit the United States later in 2026. He argues that the period between the two leaders\u2019 meetings will be crucial in determining the long-term political outcome of current tensions.<\/p>\n

In conclusion, the analyst stresses that the implications extend directly to Ukraine. In his assessment, any weakening of Western resolve regarding Taiwan would reduce Ukraine\u2019s prospects for achieving a favourable strategic outcome in its confrontation with Russia. Conversely, successful resistance to coercion in the Taiwan Strait would strengthen the broader principle that aggression should not be rewarded. For this reason, Gladkykh concludes, Taiwan and Ukraine increasingly represent interconnected fronts within a wider global struggle over the future of the rules-based international order.<\/p>\n
