Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Bra\u017ee believes that peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, currently taking place with US mediation, cannot produce results as long as Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin does not change his political objectives.<\/p>\n

The Latvian minister’s remarks were cited by Delfi<\/a>, UATV English<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n

Bra\u017ee stressed that Putin has not altered his goals of subjugating Ukraine, russifying the country, and preventing its integration into the Euro-Atlantic community.<\/p>\n

At the same time, she noted that Ukraine will not give up its right to remain a sovereign and democratic state with the freedom to choose its own path.<\/p>\n

According to the minister, various solutions could be reached at the technical level. However, at the political level, negotiations cannot succeed as long as Russia refuses to abandon its objectives.<\/p>\n

Bra\u017ee said that Russia’s demands \u2014 including granting Russian official language status in Ukraine, recognizing a special status for the Russian Orthodox Church, and relinquishing Donbas \u2014 are unacceptable to Ukraine. Other demands, such as restrictions related to Ukraine’s NATO membership and the presence of Alliance forces, are unacceptable to European countries and the broader Euro-Atlantic community.<\/p>\n

The Latvian foreign minister argued that only strength on the battlefield, combined with the strength of NATO allies, can force Russia to negotiate in good faith and abandon its political goals.<\/p>\n

She also noted that Russia is facing growing difficulties, including economic problems and high inflation, as its war economy is “cannibalizing everything else.”<\/p>\n

Bra\u017ee called for continued work on new sanctions and for cutting Russia off from critical technologies. She pointed out that recently manufactured missiles have been used in Russia’s latest attacks and that Moscow continues to obtain dual-use technologies from China and other countries.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, media reports indicate that officials from Germany, France, and United Kingdom are discussing the possibility of engaging Putin in negotiations, as they see battlefield dynamics shifting in Ukraine’s favor.<\/p>\n

In addition, an unnamed German official said that a window of opportunity for dialogue between Russia and Europe on ending the war is gradually opening, although such discussions remain possible only in full coordination with Ukraine.<\/p>\n
