Spain\u2019s Minister of Foreign Affairs Jos\u00e9 Manuel Albares believes that Europe should integrate its defence industry in order to have its own deterrence capabilities \u201cindependent of third countries,\u201d and even \u201cmove toward the creation of a European army,\u201d UATV English reports.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

His remarks were cited by EFE.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commenting on the current global situation, Albares acknowledged that with U.S. involvement in Venezuela and threats regarding Greenland, \u201cthere is no doubt\u201d that the world is witnessing \u201can attempt to change the rules of the international order.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this moment, he said, Europe must recognize \u201cits own strength\u201d and reaffirm its principles\u2014namely, preventing war on the continent and \u201cnever using coercion as a tool of foreign policy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minister expressed regret that after \u201cdecades of a strong alliance\u201d between Washington and Brussels, based on shared values and mutual benefits, the United States now has a government under Donald Trump with \u201cdifferent views.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In light of this position, Albares insisted that Europeans should not \u201cresign themselves\u201d to the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, he said he does not believe that Trump\u2019s threats will lead to the collapse of NATO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t even consider this as a hypothesis,\u201d Albares said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, the leader of the European People’s Party, Manfred Weber, called for the creation of a \u201cEuropean NATO,\u201d arguing that Europe can no longer rely unconditionally on the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that despite the current course of the Trump administration, the European Union should not completely abandon defence cooperation with the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
