{"id":1280618,"date":"2026-01-01T18:07:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-01T16:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uatv.ua\/?p=1280618"},"modified":"2026-01-01T16:49:50","modified_gmt":"2026-01-01T14:49:50","slug":"kallas-europe-s-critical-infrastructure-remains-at-high-risk-of-sabotage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uatv.ua\/en\/kallas-europe-s-critical-infrastructure-remains-at-high-risk-of-sabotage\/","title":{"rendered":"Kallas: Europe\u2019s Critical Infrastructure Remains at High Risk of Sabotage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>EU foreign policy chief warns of growing hybrid threats in the Baltic Sea amid Russia\u2019s war against Ukraine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Europe\u2019s critical infrastructure, particularly in the <strong>Baltic Sea region<\/strong>, remains under a <strong>high risk of sabotage<\/strong>, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy <strong>Kaja Kallas<\/strong> has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kallas made the statement in a post on <strong>X<\/strong>, commenting on recent incidents involving damage to undersea communication cables,<a href=\"https:\/\/uatv.ua\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0UATV English<\/a>\u00a0reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cSince the start of Russia\u2019s war, there has been a clear pattern of subversive activity in the Baltic Sea. Europe\u2019s critical infrastructure remains at high risk of sabotage,\u201d Kallas wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>She expressed gratitude to the <strong>Finnish authorities<\/strong> for their swift and decisive actions in detaining a vessel and its crew suspected of damaging undersea cables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the investigation is ongoing, Kallas stressed that <strong>Europe will remain vigilant<\/strong> and maintain close coordination with the governments of <strong>Finland and Estonia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe EU will continue to strengthen its critical infrastructure \u2014 including by investing in new cables, enhancing surveillance, increasing repair capacities, and countering Moscow\u2019s shadow fleet, which also serves as a platform for hybrid attacks,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Estonia\u2019s <strong>Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs<\/strong>, <strong>four communication cables<\/strong> connecting Estonia with other countries were damaged in recent days, along with <strong>one cable linking the island of Hiiumaa to the mainland<\/strong>.<br>An <strong>Elisa<\/strong> cable was also damaged between <strong>Finland and Estonia<\/strong> in the Gulf of Finland, within Estonia\u2019s economic zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finnish police have conducted preliminary questioning of the crew of the cargo vessel <strong>Fitburg<\/strong>, which is suspected of damaging the undersea telecommunications cable shortly before the New Year.
