EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas<\/strong> said that Europe cannot be the only one responsible for helping Ukraine stop Russia\u2019s war<\/strong>, especially after U.S. President Donald Trump promised to end the fighting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cHe promised to stop the killings. So this cannot be only our business,\u201d Kallas told Politico<\/em> on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

She reminded that the United States is NATO\u2019s largest ally<\/strong>, stressing that when people talk about what NATO should do, \u201cit also means what America should do.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, Trump pressed NATO allies<\/strong> to fully cut Russian oil and gas imports<\/strong> before Washington imposes its own tariffs or sanctions on Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cTrump was right,\u201d Kallas said. \u201cWe cut our oil and gas purchases by 80%. If everyone did what we do, the effect would be greater. We introduced 19 sanction packages. If allies did the same, the war would end faster.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Kallas urged the U.S. to use its \u201cleverage\u201d over Hungary and Slovakia<\/strong>, the two biggest importers of Russian energy in the EU, recalling a recent phone call between Trump and Hungarian PM Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/strong> as a positive step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She acknowledged U.S. officials\u2019 concerns that tougher sanctions could undermine talks with Moscow, but noted that Russia has shown no goodwill<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou come with good will, you offer all this to bring them to the table, but in reality they just escalate. \u2026 Putin abuses that good will. Now the question is, what will you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

On recent Russian airspace violations<\/strong>, Kallas said \u201cPutin is testing us, checking how far he can go.\u201d<\/strong> But she warned that a too strong response could frighten European societies<\/strong>, so leaders must \u201ckeep the balance and not fuel fear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kallas\u2019 remarks come as Kyiv and its allies seek to understand Trump\u2019s sudden shift<\/strong> in tone on the war. Earlier this week, Trump wrote on Truth Social that Ukraine can fight and regain all its territory<\/strong> with the support of the EU and NATO, which \u201ccan do whatever they want\u201d<\/strong> with U.S. weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While many European officials welcomed the tougher stance toward Russia, some fear Trump may be signaling that the U.S. will step back<\/strong> from directly mediating the conflict and shift the responsibility onto Europe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
