It has remained the foundation of the U.S.-led alliance ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump also acknowledged the efforts of NATO countries to boost their defense spending:<br>\u201cI\u2019ve been asking them to raise it to 5% for years, and now they\u2019re raising it to 5%. That\u2019s a big jump from 2%, and many weren\u2019t even meeting that. So I think this is really big news,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, sitting next to Trump, remarked, \u201cThis wouldn\u2019t have happened without Donald Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith this 5% target, Europeans and Canadians will match U.S. defense spending. This isn\u2019t about American taxpayers paying more \u2014 it\u2019s about Europeans and Canadians stepping up.
