{"id":1163287,"date":"2025-06-08T12:03:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-08T09:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uatv.ua\/?p=1163287"},"modified":"2025-06-06T09:16:22","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T06:16:22","slug":"un-advisor-says-ukraine-s-demining-will-take-decades-first-phase-to-last-five-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uatv.ua\/en\/un-advisor-says-ukraine-s-demining-will-take-decades-first-phase-to-last-five-years\/","title":{"rendered":"UN advisor says Ukraine&#8217;s demining will take decades, first phase to last five years"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The complete clearance of Ukrainian territory from mines and explosive remnants of war could take decades after the end of hostilities, according to Paul Heslop, Senior Mine Action Advisor at the UN Resident Coordinator Office in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He made this statement in a comment to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukrinform.net\/rubric-society\/4001228-un-advisor-says-ukraines-demining-will-take-decades-first-phase-to-last-five-years.html\">Ukrinform&#8217;s <\/a>correspondent in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heslop explained that demining would occur in three chronological phases. He noted that removing the most immediate threats \u2014 those directly endangering lives \u2014 might take around five years. Resolving the bulk of the problem, he added, could require between ten and fifteen years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Heslop stressed that full clearance could take significantly longer. As an example, he mentioned Germany and Belgium, where unexploded ordnance from the First and Second World Wars is still being found. He also pointed out that Ukraine only finished clearing certain areas of World War II-era ammunition last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He mentioned that in Belgium, farmers continue to uncover old shells during plowing \u2014 a phenomenon known as the &#8220;iron harvest&#8221; \u2014 even a century after World War I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the scale of the challenge, Heslop expressed confidence that with adequate support, the determination of the Ukrainian people, and the use of modern technologies, the impact of landmines on daily life could be mitigated relatively quickly.
