The now condemned and inoperable Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is located only a few hours away from the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, not far from the Belarusian southern border line.

The catastrophe and its aftermath remain in people’s minds around the world, but even more so in the memories of the locals, who remember how first responders were rushed to hospitals with radiation symptoms that are to this day incurable. 28 of the first responders died in a few months only after the explosion. Many of those who intervened on site to clean the area after the explosion died of cancer during the first 10 years.

The Chornobyl nuclear disaster is one of two nuclear incidents in the world classified as level seven – the highest level – on the International Nuclear Event Scale.

The nuclear cloud ensuing the explosion travelled all across Europe and was held responsible by some experts for a rise of cancer among Europeans.
