The US does not intend to stop coordinating the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, also known as Ramstein.
John Kirby, White House national security communications adviser, made such a statement on April 3, according to The Hill.
“It is bigger than NATO, it’s 50 some-odd nations all around the world, including in the Indo-Pacific — and what brought them together was American leadership,” John Kirby said when asked for a comment on Stoltenberg’s proposal.
Except for the 32 members of NATO, the other 24 countries are involved in the Ramstein initiative.
Earlier, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said such a move could secure aid for Ukraine in case Trump wins elections in the US or Congress fails to provide support for Ukraine.
This plan is currently being discussed in Brussels as the NATO summit in Washington is approaching.
Despite that, Kirby is convinced that the US and President Biden will maintain the position of a world leader.
“The president believes that America, and US leadership remains vital, remains important. And he’s confident that we’re going to be able to continue to demonstrate that leadership,”
As of today, US Congress has not gotten any closer to approving a Ukraine aid package. Previously, House Speaker Mike Johnson promised to offer an alternative package “with innovations”, no draft has been announced yet.
