U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance stated on Monday that if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presents a “real proposal” and “if Ukraine is ready to engage, the door is open.”

Vance made these remarks in an interview with Fox News.

CNN noted that Vance’s comments in the pre-recorded interview aired before the announcement of a pause in U.S. military aid to Ukraine.

“He (Zelenskyy) has shown a clear unwillingness to participate in a peace process, which, according to President Trump, reflects the policy of the American people and their president,” Vance said.

When asked whether Zelenskyy could return to the White House if he agreed to discuss a peace plan, Vance responded that if Zelenskyy “gets serious about the details,” the U.S. would be ready to talk again.

“I think if he called and had a serious proposal on how he intends to participate in the process… Look, there are details that really matter, and we are already working on them with the Russians. We’ve spoken with some of our allies—he needs to seriously engage in discussing the details,” the U.S. Vice President added.

“If there is a real proposal, if he (Zelenskyy) is ready to participate in the process—we are already working with the Russians and allies on the details. If Ukraine is ready to engage, the door is open.”

“If you want real security guarantees to ensure that Vladimir Putin (Russia’s ruler) never invades Ukraine again, the best way is to ensure an economic interest for Americans in Ukraine’s future,” Vance stated.

Vance emphasized that the Trump administration’s position is clear: the U.S. cannot and will not indefinitely fund the war in Ukraine.

“European leaders are actually harming Ukraine. Their people also do not want endless war funding. And neither do Americans. The only interest that aligns with the U.S., Europe, and Ukraine is ending this war. Zelenskyy goes to Europe, where he is inflated as a symbol of freedom and encouraged to keep fighting. But keep fighting with what? With whose money, whose ammunition, and whose lives?” Vance said.

Vance also stated that he is not sure whether the Russians are ready for a compromise, but it needs to be tested, as “negotiations are the only way to find out.”
