The US Army Provides Ukraine With Demining Equipment

20 sets of equipment were received by a specialist military division that deals with transport and infrastructure in the country. However, with the war in eastern Ukraine, much more equipment like this is needed.

Ukrainian military sappers are studying 20 new metal detectors that recently received from their American counterparts. The minesweepers say the new equipment is more functional and convenient than that made in Ukraine.

For Ukrainian sappers, these more advanced devices make their job easier, safer and faster. Even away from the front line in the Donbas, there are areas where ordinance left after the Second World War – lie dormant, undetected. Ukraine’s Defence Ministry says that out of the about 7,000 square kilometers of land liberated by government forces in the Donbas, less than 300 sq. kilometers has been cleared of mines. More than 325,000 explosives have already been disposed of.

According to U.N. estimates, fully clearing landmines and unexploded ordinance from Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk could take decades.
