On Thursday, September 12, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov held a telephone conversation with the head of the Romanian Ministry of National Defense, Angelo Tilvar, and announced the start of training of Ukrainian pilots on the F-16 in Romania.

According to Umerov, the key topic of the conversation with his Romanian colleague was “strengthening the protection of Ukrainian skies against Russian missiles and drones.”

“Ukraine will soon receive a new Patriot air defense system from Romanian partners. There will also be more F-16s in Ukrainian skies: a group of our pilots is already undergoing training in Romania,” he added.

The minister also announced a visit to Romania.

In turn, the Romanian Ministry of Defense noted that Tilvar “in the strongest possible terms” condemned the unprovoked and illegal Russian aggression against the Ukrainian people, including attacks on the Ukrainian population and civilian infrastructure.

The parties discussed bilateral cooperation, military support from Romania, in particular the training of Ukrainian pilots for the F-16.

We will remind you that in November 2023, the European F-16 Training Center was opened at the Fetesti Air Force Base in Romania. In July, the first Romanian pilots were trained there.
