Ukrainian defender who served as a driver in the Azov Regiment Oleksandr Ishchenko has died at the Rostov-on-Don pre-trial detention centre.

This was reported by Russia media outlets.

The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War and the Azov Regiment have confirmed the information. Referring to the defender’s daughter, Ombudsman for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets also noted that Ishchenko died 9 days ago but the Russian side didn’t inform Ukraine about it.

Lubinets has already informed UN and ICRC about the incident for them to document Russia’s crime and force it to follow the Geneva Convention.

The circumstances of Oleksandr’s death remain unclear as of now. However, it is a common knowledge Russia systematically tortures Ukrainian POWs.

“This death is another act of atrocity of the Russian Federation against Azov prisoners of war. The occupying country once again confirmed that it does not recognize any principles of morality, neglects all possible conventions on conduct of hostilities and treatment of prisoners of war,” Azov said in an official statement for Ukrainian media Hromadske.

Oleksandr Ishchenko was captured by Russians in Mariupol, his hometown, in the spring of 2022.
