Today at a meeting of the Government it was decided to establish the National Commission on the Crimean Tatar Language. It will be co-chaired by Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories Iryna Vereshchuk.
The Commission was set up to implement the Strategy for the Development of the Crimean Tatar Language for 2022-2032.
This advisory body will consist of representatives of the involved state bodies, as well as the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people and linguists from scientific and educational institutions.
The main task of the National Commission is to preserve the Crimean Tatar language, which is classified by UNESCO as a language in need of protection. And also – to promote coordination of actions of central and local executive authorities on institutional, organizational and informational support of the functioning of the Crimean Tatar language.
“Crimean Tatar is the language of one of the indigenous peoples of Ukraine, who is currently subjected to harassment and repression in the temporarily occupied Crimea. The Ukrainian authorities are doing everything to protect the rights of Crimean Tatars, their national identity. The commission established today aims to promote the preservation of national culture, traditions, customs and historical memory of the Crimean Tatar people. Together with scientists we must popularize this language among young people, raise its prestige. We must preserve our common national memory,” said the Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories Iryna Vereshchuk.
